Blue carbon (the gulf's quiet climate work)

Seagrass meadow and saltmarsh mud lock carbon away faster, hectare for hectare, than almost any forest on land — a climate service the gulf performs for free, and one Adelaide has spent a century quietly undoing.

First, meet: Living in salt (halophytes)

Stand on the St Kilda boardwalk at low tide and the mud underfoot looks like the least productive surface imaginable: grey, airless, faintly sulphurous, going nowhere. It is doing one of the more valuable jobs on this coast, and doing it in the dark. Seagrass meadow and saltmarsh do not just grow — they bury. Every year a little more dead leaf, root and algal ooze settles into sediment so waterlogged that the microbes which would otherwise breathe it back into the sky as carbon dioxide simply cannot get the oxygen to do it, and the carbon stays locked in the mud, sometimes for millennia. Ecologists call this “blue carbon” to set it apart from the carbon a forest holds standing in trunks and leaves: it is carbon banked below the waterline, in soil rather than timber, and hectare for hectare it can out-save a rainforest. Australian tidal marshes hold something like 165 tonnes of organic carbon in the top metre of soil alone, and keep adding to that store year on year (Macreadie et al. 2017).

Gulf St Vincent does this trick twice over. Out on the open coast, the Posidonia and wire-weed Amphibolis meadows that carpet the gulf floor bury carbon among their roots the same way the samphire flats do at the tideline, alongside their more visible jobs of nurserying whiting and prawns and holding the sand in place against the swell (Tanner et al. 2014). Both stores share the same vulnerability: they depend on water clarity and an undisturbed, oxygen-starved sediment, and both have been quietly drawn down by a century of Adelaide’s stormwater and sewage running out to sea, which is why more than five thousand hectares of metropolitan seagrass have vanished since the 1930s (Fox et al. 2007) — each hectare a carbon account closed, its buried store left exposed to erode and oxidise back into the atmosphere it once helped to empty.

None of this made headlines the way a burning forest does, because a drowned meadow does not throw up smoke. But the accounting is the same: carbon that took decades or centuries to bury can be released again in a single earthmoving season, and the gulf’s mud has been banking it, unnoticed, the whole time Adelaide was looking the other way. Read a healthy meadow or an intact samphire flat not as scenery but as a working ledger — one the city is only now learning to read back.
