By March, the city and the ranges behind it are running on fumes. The country can green almost overnight — a lawn gone the colour of straw in January can look plausibly alive again a week after a decent front — but the fire season rarely closes on the same afternoon. Grass cured all summer and leaf litter packed dry under the trees can stay flammable for weeks, and a return of hot, dry wind between fronts can still carry real danger into April. That lag is not a design flaw; it is the normal behaviour of a landscape built to expect fire as a recurring event on a long calendar (Keeley 2012). Only when the season’s rain has soaked in, not merely wet the surface, does the risk retreat, which is why fire authorities read fuel and soil moisture to call the season’s end, not the date on the wall.
There is a slower story riding underneath the yearly one. The break itself is drifting: as the continent warms, the cool-season rains that mark its arrival are tending to start later and fall lighter than the twentieth-century record would suggest, part of a decline already measured across south-eastern Australia’s cool season and a warming trend of roughly one and a half degrees since 1910 (CSIRO 2024). An autumn that used to be reliable is becoming one more thing to watch rather than assume.
None of which dampens what autumn delivers to the bush itself, once it properly arrives. Cooler soil and the first real moisture in months are the cue an enormous cast of Mediterranean-climate life has been waiting for: smoke-primed seed banked since the last fire, bulbs and tubers that have sat dormant through the heat, fungi that can fruit almost overnight once the litter is wet. The country tilts back toward green not because summer is officially over, but because the one clock every living thing here keeps — wet winter, dry summer — has just ticked over again.

The break is really two events arriving out of step, and it pays to keep them separate. First, the atmospheric event: the subtropical ridge, the belt of descending high pressure that blocks rain across southern Australia each summer, retreats north as the sun tracks toward the equator, and Southern Ocean cold fronts start reaching Gulf St Vincent again, typically from March, carrying the season's first substantial falls (Cowling 1996). Second, and slower, the fuel-and-soil event: fire authorities close the fire danger period not by a date but by measured fuel and soil dryness easing below a working threshold, because cured grass and leaf litter can stay flammable for weeks after the first rain, and a return of hot, dry northerly wind between fronts can still push danger back up before the season is truly done (Keeley 2012). The two clocks are drifting later than the historical record suggests they once did: cool-season rainfall across south-eastern Australia — the same rain that marks autumn's arrival here — has measurably declined since the 1990s, and Australia's observed warming of roughly one and a half degrees since 1910 is stretching the fire season from both ends (CSIRO & BoM 2024).
