What you'll take away

You feel a fern gully before you understand it. Walk off the dry, cicada-humming ridge and drop into one of the deeper creases of the southern ranges, and within a few strides the air cools against the back of your neck, the light goes green, and the crackling leaf litter underfoot gives way to soft black mud. The canopy draws shut overhead until whatever sun reaches you arrives already filtered through frond and fallen log. This is the innermost room of the mesic refuge — the most sheltered, dampest fold inside a wet island that is itself stranded in one of the driest corners of the continent.

What grows here is a small, damp-loving guild found nowhere drier: tree ferns, ground ferns, mosses, and — clinging to the wettest rock faces — filmy ferns, whose fronds are barely more than a translucent green membrane, a single cell thick. A filmy fern has no way to seal water inside itself, no waxy cuticle worth the name, so it can only survive where the air stays close to saturated around the clock. Find one and you have found exactly where the old, wetter climate still reaches, which is why these plants turn up in permanent-shade gullies and nowhere else. It is the same logic that strands the stringybark forest overhead: the Mount Lofty forests are themselves a disjunct outlier of the damper forests to the east, holding a foothold in a more summer-arid niche than their relatives further afield would tolerate (Guerin et al. 2023). The fern gully is that story taken one step further into the wet.

None of this amounts to rainforest. It is rainforest’s faint, diminished cousin, a few degrees cooler and a few percent damper than the forest around it, kept alive only by the accident of a steep shaded gully and a creek that seeps the year round (Armstrong et al. 2003). But that faintness is the point. Mediterranean-climate regions are, worldwide, disproportionate stores of exactly this kind of cornered, relictual life — small, isolated, irreplaceable (Myers et al. 2000). Stand in a fern gully on a hot February afternoon, dripping and green while the ridge above bakes, and you are standing inside the last, smallest room of the refuge: the place the drought has not yet reached, and the clearest possible demonstration of how much depends on keeping it that way.
