Every Adelaide garden with a decent gum tree seems to have one: a stocky, low, undulating flight, a flash of orange and blue landing heavily in the foliage, and then that unmistakable, faintly bad-tempered screech. This is the Adelaide rosella, and if the several hundred thousand people who live between the hills and the plains had to nominate one bird as the mascot of “nature” in their own backyard, it would win without a contest.
It is also, in a small and pleasing way, not quite what it seems. Open a field guide and you find, radiating out from South Australia, two tidily different birds: the crimson rosella, deep blood-red, at home in wet forest from the ranges right down the eastern seaboard; and the paler yellow rosella, confined to the river red gum country along the Murray, out in the dry inland. Where those two ranges meet — and Adelaide sits more or less exactly on that meeting line — the birds do not respect the tidy boundary a field guide draws. They interbreed, producing a broad band of intermediate birds that shade from crimson through orange to soft lemon-yellow as you travel from the wet ranges toward the dry river country, with the familiar orange, blue-cheeked “Adelaide” bird sitting squarely in the middle of that cline. It is, in other words, the region’s whole wet-to-dry gradient made feather.
None of which the bird itself seems to notice or mind. It is a supremely adaptable generalist, equally happy in remnant stringybark forest, roadside gum, orchard, park or garden, eating seed, blossom, fruit and the odd insect, and nesting in any hollow deep enough to take it — and it is precisely that flexibility that has let it thrive through two centuries in which many of the region’s forest specialists have not. While the Mount Lofty Ranges’ fussier woodland birds have spent decades sliding toward local extinction as their habitat was cleared and cut into unworkable fragments, the rosella has moved into whatever replaced the forest (Szabo et al. 2011).
Which is exactly what makes it worth a second look rather than a shrug. A bird this common, working a birdbath in a garden built on the sliver of native vegetation the Adelaide Plains still carries, is quietly teaching the region’s harder lesson (Bradshaw 2012). Watch it and, without meaning to, you set your own idea of “a healthy patch of nature” against a landscape that has already lost the specialists that once filled it — a shifting baseline running in real time, one bright, undemanding parrot at a time (Pauly 1995). The Adelaide rosella is not a fraud for doing this. It is the last generalist standing, giving a very good impression of the country that came before it.
Reading the country
Learn to see the Adelaide rosella as a hybrid and a survivor at once, and the tidy blue-and-orange bird at the feeder becomes a small lesson in how much of “nature” here is adaptation and gap-filling rather than the original cast. Look closer at the colour on any one bird — a shade more crimson, a shade more yellow — and you are reading a compressed version of the whole state’s rainfall gradient, the same wet-to-dry axis that sorts every other living thing in this book. Then ask what else used to share that garden, and you have arrived, gently, at the region’s returning question.

Go deeper — the mechanism & the evidence
Hybrid zones like this one are less an evolutionary accident than a piece of evolutionary information. Where two closely related forms meet after being kept apart by drier country for long enough to look different, but not long enough to lose the ability to interbreed, the usual result is a broad, blended contact zone rather than a hard line on the map — which is exactly what runs through Adelaide. That zone tracks the same rainfall gradient that shapes almost everything else in this book, wetter forest to the south and east, drier woodland to the north, so the bird's plumage is, in effect, a visible readout of the same climate axis that sorts soil, vegetation and species turnover across the whole region. Layered onto that natural pattern is a human one. As forest specialists retreat under land clearance and fragmentation (Szabo et al. 2011), a generalist, hollow-nesting, dietarily flexible bird like the rosella faces less competition for whatever habitat remains and becomes proportionally more visible even as the region's bird community as a whole grows poorer — abundance and diversity moving in opposite directions on the same small, cleared patch of ground (Pauly 1995; Bradshaw 2012).
