Built to burn
Read the fire-survival kit in the field — the plants that are pruned by fire, not killed, and the bird that farms it.
Start with the paradox itself: this is fire country, a bush that has been burning for so long it no longer treats flame as an ending. Then go looking for the kit that proves it. The grasstree wears its own dead leaves as a fireproof jacket and answers a scorching with a flowering spike. The banksia banks its seed in a woody cone welded shut until heat itself is the key. The mallee eucalypt gives up on being a single tree altogether, sprouting a dozen stems from one buried lignotuber that has outlasted fire after fire after fire. And last, the malleefowl — no fire adaptation of its own, just an old bird running an incubator out of raked litter, entirely dependent on this cycle of burn and regrowth staying gentle and rare enough to let its compost heap mature.

You find an old banksia cone on the ground: woody, grey, and split in places into hard little beaks that gape but have not fully opened, with seed still visible locked inside. Why does a banksia cone hold its seed sealed like this for years rather than releasing it straight away, as most plants do?
This is serotiny: the cone is welded shut by resin and can hold seed for a decade or more, opening only when a fire's heat melts that seal (Auld 2020). The payoff is timing rather than storage for its own sake — a cone that opens after fire drops its seed onto bare, ash-fertilised soil with rivals cleared away, instead of into an already-crowded, shaded understorey. Serotiny is not a banksia quirk; it is a convergent strategy that chaparral, fynbos and maquis have each evolved independently on the world's other Mediterranean-climate coasts (Cowling et al. 1996).
A fire sweeps through a rain-shadow mallee stand east of the Mount Lofty Ranges and kills every stem in a clump right down to ground level. What happens next?
Eucalypts carry two separate fire-recovery mechanisms, and a mallee's identity is built on leaning on the second one as routine rather than last resort. Epicormic buds under the bark can only save a stem that is scorched but not killed outright; once every stem is killed, as a mallee's routinely are, recovery falls to the lignotuber — a buried, multi-budded rootstock banking dormant buds and starch below the reach of the heat, which resprouts a fresh many-stemmed clump (Auld 2020; Burrows 2013).
A malleefowl is not killed outright by a mallee fire that sweeps through its home range. Why does frequent burning still threaten the bird, and why does that make old, long-unburnt scrub like Ngarkat one of its last strongholds?
The malleefowl's whole incubation strategy runs on buried litter rotting slowly to give off heat, so a mound is only as good as the deep, long-undisturbed litter layer underneath it. Post-fire studies of mallee vegetation show that the litter, hollows and structural cover fauna depend on rebuild on a scale of roughly fifteen years, not one or two — so country burnt on a short cycle never accumulates enough litter to support a mound (Haslem et al. 2011). That is exactly why long-unburnt blocks like Ngarkat, largely missed by both the plough and frequent fire, remain among the species' best strongholds.
