The gradient (for students)

For senior-secondary and undergraduate students: read the gulf-to-range transect as a live demonstration of climate, adaptation and clearance — a field lesson in one slope.

Start with the whole map: one transect, gulf to summit to rain shadow, and the three variables (rainfall, temperature, soil chemistry) that change together as you climb it. Then walk the transect’s evidence in order. The samphire flats show you the salt threshold at the bottom, where two opposite strategies (storing salt, excreting it) solve the same problem. Climb to the stringybark forest and you are standing in a mesic refugium, a wet island stranded by drought, its birdsong already thinning with a debt not yet fully paid. Cross the range and drop into the rain-shadow mallee, and watch the same climate rule flip the story: the dryness that ruined wheat farmers is the reason this is the best-kept ecosystem on the gradient. Finish with reading absence — the method, not a place — turning what you’ve just seen into a habit: shifting baselines, extinction debt, and clearance read like a detective reads a scene.

You climb out of the cleared Adelaide Plains onto the Mount Lofty fault scarp and, quite suddenly, tall closed-canopy forest closes over the road. The trunks are shaggy, fibrous-barked eucalypts unlike anything on the plain below, the air feels noticeably cooler and damper, and on this spring morning the birdsong seems thin for a forest this size. Here and there a hillside shows a patch of browned, dead-looking canopy among the green. Which of the region's worlds are you standing in?

Every cue points to the wooded spine of the ranges rather than anywhere else on the gulf-to-range gradient: the sudden closed canopy and shaggy-barked messmate and brown stringybark mark a mesic refugium, wrung from westerly rain that runs to roughly 1000 mm a year on the high ranges, more than twice the coastal plain's total (Armstrong et al. 2003). The thin birdsong is the audible edge of an extinction debt — more than half the ranges' monitored woodland bird species are in decline after clearing left only about a tenth of the original forest standing (Szabo et al. 2011; Prowse et al. 2021) — and the browned hillside patches are drought dieback, worst on the hotter, drier range margins (Guerin et al. 2023). Samphire, mallee and plains woodland each sit elsewhere on the gradient and share none of these signs.

You've driven down the eastern side of the ranges and the tall forest has thinned to a low, grey-green scrub. The trees here are odd: each has a dozen or more thin stems fanning up from a single point at ground level, with no single trunk. Underfoot between them is pale, deep sand, patched with spiky hummock grasses and grey-green saltbush. Which of the region's worlds are you standing in, and why does it look like this?

A eucalypt sprouting a dozen thin stems from one point rather than growing a single trunk is a mallee — a growth form built around resprouting after fire from a buried, starch-and-bud-packed lignotuber (Burrows 2013). Add a fast switch from tall wet forest to low scrub within a few kilometres of the crest, deep pale dune sand, and an understorey of spinifex and saltbush, and you're at the driest end of the gradient, where the ranges have already wrung the rain out of the sea wind (Foulkes & Gillen 2000). Stringybark forest, the samphire coast and Adelaide Plains woodland each belong to a different rung of the gulf-to-range gradient — none of them grows multi-stemmed lignotuber eucalypts over spinifex.

The Mount Lofty Ranges have been cleared to roughly a tenth of their original woodland cover. What does the decades-long bird survey record actually show happened to the woodland birds — and why does it count as an 'extinction debt' rather than a one-off loss?

Extinction debt means the bill for habitat loss is not settled on the day the bulldozers leave — some species hang on in fragments with their fate already decided, the loss merely not yet called in. Szabo and colleagues tested this against the Mount Lofty Ranges and found around ten woodland bird species already regionally extinct, over half of the remainder still declining, and a further thirty-five to fifty species modelled as already committed to eventual regional loss even with no further clearing (Szabo et al. 2011). That gap between modelled commitment and observed loss is what makes reading absence detective work rather than a single glance.
