Look low. That is the one instruction that matters if you want to find the Mount Lofty chestnut-rumped heathwren, because this is a bird built to be overlooked — small, streaked in brown and buff, held close and low to the ground, with a single flourish that gives it away: a warm chestnut patch above the tail, flashed for a moment as it scuttles, mouse-like, from one clump of cover to the next.

It keeps the same company as the southern emu-wren, sharing the denser, scrubbier stands of wet heath that fringe the ranges’ rare permanently damp ground, and it keeps the same rule: stay under cover, and do not cross open ground if there is any way around it (Armstrong 2003). That single habit, a horror of exposure, is what has made it, like its neighbour, a bird that a cleared paddock or a fence-line gap can strand for good.

What sets the heathwren apart is how the map reads. Chestnut-rumped heathwrens more broadly are heath-country birds of southern Australia, but the Mount Lofty population is its own race, parkeri, differentiated in isolation and found nowhere else on the planet. That is disjunction doing its quiet work: a population cut off long enough by the drying and clearing of the country around it that it has become, in the taxonomists’ eyes, a thing apart, with no corridor of livable habitat left to carry its genes anywhere else.

And it is desperately reduced. The entire known population is drawn from something like eight sites, strung out along the whole length of the ranges from Tanunda in the north to Deep Creek in the south — which sounds like a wide range until you realise it means eight isolated dots across more than a hundred kilometres, not one continuous population. It is listed nationally as endangered, and it is exactly the kind of case the extinction-debt idea was built to describe: not yet gone, but committed by fragmentation to a decline that the clearing of its habitat set in motion long before anyone had counted the surviving sites (Szabo 2011). To find the heathwren, then, is to find both a genuine surviving scrap of the Mount Lofty wet-heath refuge, and a countdown clock — proof the refuge is real, and a reminder of how little of it is left to hold onto.
