Park at the Mount Lofty summit car park and give yourself five minutes of walking downhill, and you can watch the whole argument of this book happen under your boots. Behind you: the long grazed and roaded habit of two centuries of clearing. Ahead, past the crest, the track drops into Cleland Conservation Park and the country changes almost at a step — stringybark and pink gum closing overhead, wattle and heath crowding the ground below, a forest tall and continuous in a way nothing on the plains below has managed within living memory. Nowhere else on the drive up from the gulf is the join between “cleared” and “intact” so short a walk.
The forest survives here for the same reason it survives anywhere in these hills: rain. Lifted by the range-front fault, Cleland’s ridges wring something close to twice the rainfall out of the winter westerlies that the plains fifteen kilometres downhill make do with, and that extra water buys a cool, moist pocket — a mesic refugium — in one of the driest corners of the continent (Armstrong 2003). The messmate and brown stringybark roofing the canopy are refugees of a kind themselves, cut off from their real strongholds far to the wetter south-east and holding a hotter, drier niche than their eastern relatives will tolerate (Guerin 2023).
Now pick a pink-gum leaf off the ground and roll it between your fingers. It will not feel like a leaf at all — small, stiff, faintly waxy, tough enough to survive a squeeze. That is sclerophylly, the hard-leaf trick the whole Mediterranean-climate world uses to stop a leaf leaking itself dry over a rainless summer, and here it is, growing out of the wettest ground on the entire gulf-to-range transect (Keeley 2012). Even inside the refuge, every leaf is still built for drought. Cleland is the point on the transect where drought has been outvoted, for now, by altitude and rain.
Stand still and listen a while, though, and the forest admits something the leaves do not. The chorus overhead is thinner than a stand this size ought to carry: across the ranges, more than half of the monitored woodland bird species have been in decline for sixteen years running (Prowse 2021). A visibly intact canopy and a quietly emptying one can be the same patch of trees — the whole discipline of reading absence in one short walk. The country here still looks, from the car park, like the forest primeval; listen closer, and it is a refuge working hard against a drying climate, one rainy corner at a time.
Go deeper — the mechanism & the evidence
Cleland is a doubly precarious refuge, worn at from two directions at once. It exists because the range-front fault lifts these ridges into the path of the winter westerlies, wringing out something close to twice the rain that falls on the plains below and sustaining a cool, moist mesic refugium in one of the driest corners of the continent (Armstrong et al. 2003). That same arithmetic - drought, and often nutrient-poor soil alongside it - is what built sclerophylly into every leaf in the canopy: small, tough, evergreen foliage that spends as little water as possible and is cheap to hold onto for years rather than replace each season (Keeley et al. 2012). But a refuge only works while it stays wet enough, and the droughts of 2006-2009 and 2018-2019 already sent whole hillsides of Mount Lofty stringybark brown and leafless, worst on the hotter, drier range edges nearest country like this (Guerin et al. 2023). Layered on top, sixteen years of standardised surveys show more than half the ranges' woodland bird species in decline even where the canopy still stands closed and green (Prowse et al. 2021). Cleland looks, from the car park, like the forest primeval. It is closer to a forest running two slow deficits at once, still open for business.
