A four-gram scrap of a bird that cannot fly across open ground and will not live anywhere but old, unburnt spinifex — wiped from South Australia by a single 2014 fire, and carried back across the border by hand from 2018.

Some birds you find by looking for the bird. This one you find by looking for the right kind of nothing: dense, tussocked, structurally old spinifex that has gone a decade and a half or more without burning. Give a Triodia hummock that long undisturbed and it thickens into a maze of sheltered runways just the right size for a bird that will not, cannot, take to open air. At around four grams, with a weak, fluttering flight better suited to hopping between grass stems than crossing a gap, the mallee emu-wren is for practical purposes earthbound — a stretch of bare ground a person would barely register is, to this bird, an uncrossable moat (DEWHA 2009).
That single fact — flightless enough to matter, cover-dependent to the point of obsession — explains a catastrophe. In the summer of 2014, an enormous wildfire tore through Ngarkat Conservation Park, in the mallee behind the eastern Mount Lofty Ranges, and burned through the oldest, most valuable spinifex left in the state (DEH 2004). A bird that cannot outrun a fire front and cannot fly on to the next unburnt patch over the horizon has no fallback, and in that one fire season the entire South Australian population of the species vanished — every bird, everywhere. Spinifex takes something like fifteen years of undisturbed growth to rebuild the dense structure fire-sensitive animals need, which left the state, for a while, with the habitat’s future intact and no bird left to use it (Haslem 2011).
The rebuilding began the only way it could: by hand, and from elsewhere. From 2018, conservationists began catching mallee emu-wrens from populations still holding on across the border in Victoria, driving them west, and releasing them into South Australian spinifex that had finally regrown thick enough to hide them again — a whole state’s population restarted a few founders at a time (DEWHA 2009). The bird now keeps company with nineteen other mallee specialists, reckoned together since 2021 as a single Commonwealth-listed endangered bird community, on the plain logic that none of them can be saved one at a time (TSSC 2021).
To find a mallee emu-wren today — or even the old spinifex it needs — is to be looking at a rescue still in progress. It is proof of two things at once: that a fire regime broken at exactly the wrong moment can erase a species from a whole state in a single season, and that patient, unglamorous, cross-border work can, possibly, put it back.
