Sooner or later, in almost any Adelaide garden with a decent hedge, something small and urgent will burst out of the foliage, flick a tail like a raised finger, and vanish again before you have properly seen it. Wait a moment longer, and if it is spring, the owner of that tail may perch in the open for a second or two: a sparrow-sized bird wearing a coat no local sparrow could manage — an electric, almost unreal cap and cape of blue-black, set off by a jet bill and a matching black bib. This is the superb fairy-wren, and that startling blue is a male in his few months of breeding finery, worn like a costume over what is, underneath, a fairly ordinary small brown bird.

Most of the year, most fairy-wrens you meet are brown — females always, and males for the eight or nine months they spend out of breeding dress, all but indistinguishable from their mates at a glance. Look past the plumage and the more interesting trick is social. Fairy-wrens live in small, tight, year-round groups holding a scrap of territory together, and the breeding pair is rarely alone at the nest: sons and daughters from earlier broods commonly stay on as helpers, feeding the next round of chicks before ever breeding themselves. It is one of the better-known cooperative breeding systems in Australian ornithology, and notoriously not a faithful one — that gaudy blue male spends a good deal of his display season courting females in neighbouring territories, and a fair few chicks in any nest turn out not to belong to the resident male at all. The tidy picture of a devoted pair in a garden hedge undersells a more complicated arrangement.

What ties all of this back to reading the country is habitat, and here the fairy-wren is unfussy about the wrong things and exacting about the right one. It barely uses the tree canopy at all. What it needs is dense, low, tangled cover close to the ground — a lomandra clump, a prickly hakea, an unmown verge, a hedge nobody has cut back to bare stems — to nest in, hide in and dodge cats and currawongs. That is a modest requirement, and it is exactly what the original grassy woodland of the plains was built to supply, before the plains were cleared down to a scrap of their old cover (Kraehenbuehl 1996). Something like four per cent of that original Adelaide Plains vegetation survives at all (Bradshaw 2012), and up at the range front closer to ninety per cent of the original bush has been cleared, thinned or cut into disconnected pieces (Szabo et al. 2011).

A fairy-wren cannot tell you a whole ecosystem is intact — it is far too adaptable a generalist for that, unlike the swamp-bound southern emu-wren it superficially resembles. But its absence from an otherwise green, tidy garden or reserve is a small, honest piece of evidence: somewhere in all that greenery, the low, scruffy layer the bird lives in has been mowed, weeded or pruned away. Leave a hedge a little wild, or a verge a little rough, and it is often the first bird to come back and tell you so.
