What you'll take away

You will meet the New Holland honeyeater before you decide to go looking for one. It is one of the loudest, boldest, least shy birds in the Adelaide bush — a small, wiry thing in crisp black-and-white streaks, with a startling white eye, a fine curved bill built for probing tubular flowers, and a flash of lemon-yellow through the wing and tail that shows only when it flies. It does not sit quietly. It scolds, chases, dive-bombs other honeyeaters twice its size off a good flowering shrub, and generally behaves as though the banksia in front of you were a property it is defending, which, for the length of the flowering season, it more or less is.

That aggression is the visible edge of a much larger, quieter arrangement. Southern Australia’s characteristic shrubs — banksias, grevilleas, bottlebrushes, the emu-bushes and grasstrees of the heath and dry sclerophyll — do not, on the whole, bother much with insects. Their flowers are big, brushy, loaded with nectar and often built in reds, oranges and yellows, held out stiffly on sturdy stems: not the fine-grained blooms of a European meadow but robust fittings designed to be visited by something with feathers rather than six legs (Ford 1979). The New Holland honeyeater is one of the most reliable birds doing that visiting, plunging its bill into flower after flower for a drink of sugar-water and picking up a dusting of pollen on its face each time, which it then carries, entirely by accident, to the next bush along. The plant buys a courier; the bird buys a living; and a botanist can, if they know what to look for, read the shape of a flower and predict which kind of animal it is bribing.

None of this is fixed in place. Nectar in the Adelaide hills is a seasonal crop, thickest through winter and spring when the poorer-soil shrubs come into bloom, and honeyeaters move to follow it, sometimes covering real distance between one flowering patch and the next (Ford 1986). A New Holland honeyeater working a suburban grevillea in July is doing the same job, on the same rhythm, as its ancestors working the wild heath — a pleasant thought, and a slightly misleading one. This is one of the region’s toughest, most adaptable nectar-feeders, equally happy in a remnant scrub, a planted reserve or a well-chosen garden, and it is still common because it can make do where fussier relatives cannot. The little lorikeet, the swift parrot and the regent honeyeater, all part of the same bird-and-flower economy, have already been lost from these hills, casualties of a landscape too cleared and fragmented to keep supplying them (Szabo 2011). So take the New Holland honeyeater’s cheerful racket in a garden shrub for what it is: real evidence the pollination bargain still runs here, and no evidence at all that it is running well.

Go deeper — the mechanism & the evidence

The honeyeater's business is a marked bird tracking a moving meal. Nectar in the Mount Lofty region is not evenly spread through the year: it peaks in the cooler months, as the shrubs of the region's poor soils come into bloom, then thins away as summer closes the flowering down. Honeyeaters follow that supply rather than sitting still for it, and the tracking can be considerable — individual birds have been recorded moving tens of kilometres, and in some cases as much as a hundred, between one patch of flowering shrubland and the next (Ford & Paton 1986). That only works, of course, if the flowering country is still connected enough to cross. Where it is not, the arrangement breaks down in a way you can measure rather than just guess at: researchers working in the Mount Lofty bush have left some flowering branches open to whatever birds still visit and hand-pollinated others with a brush, and found the open branches routinely set less seed — proof that the plant is short of couriers, not pollen (Ford & Paton 1986). The New Holland honeyeater, mobile, catholic in its tastes and tolerant of modified ground, is among the couriers still turning up. Specialists with narrower habits — the little lorikeet, the swift parrot, the regent honeyeater — are not, having already been lost from these hills as the fragmented woodland stopped supplying them reliably (Szabo et al. 2011). The New Holland honeyeater's persistence is not evidence the bargain is intact; it is evidence of which kind of partner survives when it starts to fail.
