Birds that carry the pollen

In southern Australia it is birds, not bees, that do much of the flower-visiting work — honeyeaters and lorikeets carrying pollen between brush-blossomed, often-red flowers built for them, in a partnership a fragmented landscape can no longer properly feed.

Stand under a flowering grevillea or a red-flowered eucalypt in the Adelaide hills and you will not, on the whole, hear buzzing.

You will hear wings and a rasping chatter, because in southern Australia the heavy lifting of pollination has largely been handed to birds.

More than a hundred Australian bird species have been recorded visiting flowers, and honeyeaters and lorikeets are the most committed of them — some honeyeaters live almost entirely on nectar, working from bloom to bloom with a brush-tipped tongue built for the job (Ford, Paton & Forde 1979).

The flowers know their audience.

The plants they favour — eucalypts, banksias, grevilleas, correas, the spidery emu-bushes, bottlebrushes, grasstrees — carry big, brushy or tubular blooms loaded with nectar and often dyed red or orange, a colour bees see poorly but birds see well, held out on stems sturdy enough to take a honeyeater’s weight rather than a bee’s.

Brush the bird’s face against the flower and pollen goes home on its forehead, to be delivered, a wingbeat later, to the next bloom down the gully.

The relationship runs on a calendar, not just a design.

Across the Mount Lofty region the flowers of the poorer, better-drained soils bloom mostly through winter and spring, so honeyeaters move into the range as the nectar comes on, feed and nest while it lasts, then drift away again as the blooms close down for summer, some travelling tens of kilometres between patches (Ford & Paton 1986).

That is a partnership built for a big, connected bush — which is exactly what the Mount Lofty Ranges no longer are.

Clearing here fell hardest on the fertile lower slopes that once carried the richest flowering shrubs, so the birds now hunt nectar across a landscape cut into scraps too far apart to string a season together.

The unravelling shows up in the numbers: roughly ten Mount Lofty woodland-bird species already regionally extinct, more than half the rest in decline, and tens more modelled to follow even without another tree falling — a debt the landscape has already incurred but not yet finished paying (Szabo et al. 2011).

Read a fenceline remnant with its shrubs unvisited and unset with seed, and you are reading the same story: a courier grounded, and a flower waiting for a bird that no longer comes.

Go deeper — the mechanism & the evidence

The mechanism has a season built into it. In the Mount Lofty region the shrubs of the poorer soils — banksia, grevillea, the emu-bushes — flower mostly through the cooler half of the year, so nectar peaks in winter and spring rather than summer (Ford & Paton 1986). Honeyeaters follow that pulse rather than sitting still for it: they move into the flowering country as it comes into bloom, feed and breed while the nectar lasts, then drift on as the blooms fade, some ranging tens of kilometres and occasionally as much as a hundred between patches in a single season. That mobility is the partnership's whole point — no fixed population of insects could track such a shifting, patchy resource — but it is also the partnership's weak point. Clearing that leaves flowering shrubs as scattered, disconnected scraps forces birds to fly further between fewer rewards, and the Mount Lofty woodland-bird community bears this out: roughly ten species already regionally extinct, more than half the remaining woodland species in decline, and a further 35–50 species modelled to be lost from the region over time even without further clearing — an "extinction debt" already being paid (Szabo et al. 2011). A pollination system built around long-distance matching between bird and bloom is precisely the kind that fragmentation breaks first.
